The Story
When a struggling 16th century French physician hears strange voices warning him how King Henry II wil die, he reluctantly leaves his wife to travel to Paris where his accurate prediction makes him a court celebrity. As a result of the death of his wife, who betrays him to the Inquisition, he encounters the supernatural and accepts that he must fulfill his calling as a major prophet.
The History
The journey of creating words and music to Nostradamus began in the early nineties. Then in 1997 Jackson B Sutcliff (the librettist) joined Ziggy de Voight (the composer) to create the beautiful lyrical score that has brought to life the story of an ordinary man who discovers he has an extraordinary gift – the gift of prophecy.
Nostradamus has benefited from several workshops in Australia as well as piano presentations in Vienna and Paris. The Western Australia Opera Company and Eastman Group co-produced a stage concert version which was performed in front of an enthusiastic capacity audience at the Perth Concert Hall in 2002.
The extremely positive audience response to the stage concert version encouraged he creators to expand the market potential of Nostradamus - they decided to develop a fully staged music theatre version. The workshop to demonstrate this new version took place in September 2006 in Melbourne.
